Launch of cooperation in the water sector in Georgia

The Finnish Environment Institute is engaged in diverse international cooperation in environmental issues. One of the ongoing international projects was launched in Georgia in early June. The Georgia Waters project, led by Project Manager Karri Eloheimo of the SYKE Freshwater Centre, aims at improving the status and ecology of water bodies, and curbing the impacts of climate change. The project forms part of Finland’s FinWaterWEI programme under the Wider Europe Initiative. Read more

European river habitat to suffer water shortage

In many locales, Eastern Europe’s river habitat ecosystems will suffer due to global warming. According to new EU research, water resources available for human consumption will also reduce in Southern Europe. Read more

Sustainable Public Procurement actions to green the market

SYKE has been active in both national and international co-operation for developing environmental criteria for the various products and services that public organisations procure. A lot has also been done for developing the measurement of the 'greenness' of public procurement. Finnish public organisations present quite a lot of environmental requirements and award criteria, as shown by the two monitoring exercises organised by the European Commission in 2005 and 2007. Results of Climate Change Adaptation Research Programme utilised in web tool

Finland’s Climate Change Adaptation Research Programme ISTO was concluded at the end of 2010. Most of the programme’s projects have already published their final reports. The programme produced diverse research data on the impacts of climate change on various sectors, and on the possibilities for adapting to these impacts. Concise descriptions of all ISTO project results are available as part of the ISTO-Finessi web tool, implemented by the Finnish Environment Institute and financed by the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry. Removing nutrients from the sea by growing algae?

The Finnish Environment Institute (SYKE) is clarifying whether the Baltic Sea nutrient load might be reduced by growing algae. This algae cultivation research forms part of the international SUBMARINER project, investigating new ways of using the sea. The project is seeking new means of combining economic activities with improvement of the marine ecosystem. Read more

Improvement needed in the status of transboundary waters

The Second Assessment of Transboundary Rivers, Lakes and Groundwaters was published at the Ministerial Conference “Environment for Europe” in Kazakhstan in September. A major part of the funding for the assessment was provided by the Ministry for Foreign Affairs of Finland, and it was financed by FinWaterWEI, the Programme for Finland’s Water Sector Support to the EECCA (Eastern Europe, Caucasus and Central Asia) Countries under the Wider Europe Initiative. Implementation of the initiative’s water component is being managed by the Finnish Environment Institute. Read more
